Irish Ambassador Dónal Cronin launches netLabs!UG Research Space

netLabs!UG was officially launched on the 9th March 2017 and the netLabs!UG Research Space was opened. Dr. Jonathan Serugunda acting as MC opened the event by calling on all to introduce themselves. He then asked Eng. Diarmuid Ó Briain to present on netLabs!UG. Diarmuid outlined the background and the thought processes that went in to start netLabs!UG as a Telecommunications Centre of Excellence to consider future networks and the connectivity problems of Uganda. (Presentation can be found here). After this presentation Dr. Jonathan invited Deputy-Principal of CEDAT, Dr. Venny Nakazibwe to speak on behalf of the College and University. Dr. Venny invited his Excellency Dónal Cronin, Ambassador of Ireland in Uganda to officially launch netLabs!UG. The ambassador made an excellent speech which considered the lessons of Ireland and how it lifted itself from an mainly agriculture economy in the 1970s to one that has the majority of software, Internet and pharmaceutical companies with a base there. He then linked this to Uganda and presented tips as to how the country could follow this lead based on work by research centres of excellence like netLabs!UG. Jovia Margaret Nanyonjo a 3rd year student presented on her experience as an intern on the initial netLabs!UG Industrial training in 2016. The cutting of the cake to officially launch netLabs!UG followed.

The party then moved to the Research Space and the ambassador cut the ribbon. Ambrose Ahurra gave a presentation and demonstration of his work on Software Defined Networking (SDN), he did a great job and his demonstration showed the kind of work that the netLabs!UG Research Space will be used for into the future. The event was closed by some remarks by the principal researcher Eng. Dr. Dorothy Okello.
